Why should you attend counseling/therapy?

Relationship & Communication Issues:

Therapy provides a unique space to address conflict, learn active listening, rebuild trust, and set healthy boundaries in romantic, family or professional relationships.

Here are common downsides to using your friends to address your concerns instead of a therapist:

  • Lack of Objectivity & Training: Friends care about you and will instinctively take your side or let their own personal experiences cloud their judgment. They also are not equipped to identify deep-seated psychological patterns or provide evidence-based coping strategies.

  • Resentment and Burnout: Over-reliance can lead to avoidance. If your friend starts feeling like your therapist, they may stop responding to you or withdraw from you and your friendship entirely.

  • Damaged Reciprocity: Friendships are meant to be a two-way street. Frequently trauma-dumping or centering conversations exclusively around your struggles can make your friends feel drained or unheard.

  • Breaks in Confidentiality: Unlike professionals, friends are not bound by ethics to keep your information private.

Mental Health Management:

Therapy assists you in treating specific conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, insomnia, emotional regulation, self-esteem and self-confidence.

Resolving Trauma:

Processing your trauma significantly alleviates, and sometimes eliminates your symptoms that are disrupting your daily life. However, healing is not a linear process, and complex post-traumatic stress often requires longer-term treatment.

Life Transitions:

Significant life changes — such as a career shift, moving to a new city, getting married or divorced can be highly disorienting and stressful to process by yourself.

Personal Growth & Exploration:

You do not have to be in crisis or experiencing greater severity of problems to experience the benefits of therapy. Therapy helps many people gain greater insight and deeper self-awareness of themselves, modify and challenge limiting beliefs you have about yourself and the world, and helps to explore your personal identity, values, and future life goals. In general it is nice to have a trusted professional you can always go to to express yourself and decompress.
